Virginia Leaders Applaud Creation of Children’s Cabinet

Governor McAuliffe signed an Executive Order yesterday creating a cabinet solely dedicated to the education, health, safety, and welfare of Virginia’s children and youth. The newly launched Children’s Cabinet will develop and implement a policy agenda that will help better serve Virginia’s children and will also foster collaboration between state and local agencies.  As a part of that effort, the Governor also signed a second Executive Order establishing the Commonwealth Council on Childhood Success. This Council will be chaired by Lt. Governor Northam and will focus on improving the health, education, and well-being of our youngest children.

These executive orders have received praise from leaders across the Commonwealth:

Senator Louise Lucas, Portsmouth:

“Governor McAuliffe has taken executive action to ensure that our children will receive a high quality education in the Commonwealth. As Executive Director of the largest anti-poverty agency in the state in the 80ties I had responsibility for Head Start and Project Discovery. I am delighted that the Governor and his administration will focus on improving the lives of many Virginians and their families.”

Delegate Tag Greason, Loudoun:

“I applaud the Governor for his efforts and leadership to improve education and opportunities for our children and their families. If we are going to build the economy Virginians deserve, we must work together to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive here in the Commonwealth.”

Delegate Jennifer McClellan, Richmond City:

“I am proud to stand with Governor McAuliffe as he announced a big step forward for our children in the Commonwealth.  This is a positive action towards strengthening our families and improving early childhood care and education.”

Delegate Rob Krupicka, Alexandria:

“The Governor understands that success for our children depends on things both in and out of the classroom.  That means making sure every level of government and every branch is coordinating itself for the best success of our children and families.  I'm looking forward to working with the Children's Cabinet to ensure we continue to be the best state for a child to grow up.”

Margaret Nimmo Crowe, Voices for Virginia’s Children:

"Governor McAuliffe's creation of a Children's Cabinet is exciting news for those of us working every day to improve the lives of Virginia's children. For the first time, a Virginia governor has elevated children's issues to the highest level of state government, showing his intention to work collaboratively to solve the most pressing challenges facing our kids. At Voices for Virginia's Children, we believe this is an excellent step forward."

Lisa Specter-Dunaway, CHIP of Virginia:

“We are so excited to work with such a committed governor and his administration to improve the lives of our youngest citizens, their families, and our future workforce.  We all know that starting early is the key to success -changing lives, two generations at a time.”

Gina Patterson, Virginia School Boards Association:

“The Virginia School Boards Association applauds Governor McAuliffe, Secretary Holton and his entire administration for their focus on the health, safety and education of all children,” said Gina Patterson, VSBA Executive Director. “The work of the VSBA, specifically the VSBA Task Force on Challenged Schools, goes hand-in-hand with the priorities laid out by the Children’s Cabinet, focusing on closing the achievement gap and empowering families and communities to help their children succeed. We look forward to continuing this work and important dialogue with the McAuliffe administration, the Children’s Cabinet, and the Commonwealth Council on Childhood Success to find innovative solutions that support Virginia’s youth.”

Meg Gruber, Virginia Education Association:

“Governor Terry McAuliffe said he would focus on children and he is a man of his word.  With the formation of both the Children’s Cabinet and the Commonwealth Council on Children’s Success, he is ensuring that the needs of our children in their most formative years will be addressed. I commend the Governor on these initiatives.”
